About ASHRAE

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global organization of 50,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. ASHRAE was formed as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers by the 1959 merger of the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE), founded in 1894, and the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE), founded in 1904.

ASHRAE is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the public's benefit through research, standards writing, continuing education and publications. Through its membership, ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform methods of testing and rating equipment and establish accepted practices for the HVAC&R industry worldwide, such as the design of energy efficient buildings. The Society's research program, currently more than 100 research projects worth nearly $8 million, investigates numerous issues, such as identifying new refrigerants that are environmentally safe. ASHRAE organizes broad-based technical programs for presentation at its semiannual meetings and co-sponsors the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition, the largest HVAC&R trade show in North America.

The Central Illinois Chapter of ASHRAE was chartered on Sept 19, 1956 and currently serves 34 counties in the middle section of the state. Our members are design engineers, professors, suppliers, facility managers, and industry professionals scattered across the mid-section of the state. Our chapter is unique in that while we are a small enough group to know everyone's name, we cover a large enough area that wherever your work takes you, you'll have a connection there already. The friendships built between members in our chapter are formed from our common interests in bettering the practices and products of our profession. Meetings are typically held in the Bloomington-Normal area, but have a history of moving around to share the burden of a long drive for our members on the outskirts. Our most active student chapters are out of Bradley in Peoria, and U of I out of Champaign-Urbana. Students are able to attend our meetings free of charge and are highly encouraged to join us! We offer scholarships and mentorships to the next generation because we have a great interest to play a part in the future of HVAC for Central Illinois.
